Startup reporter

Message Lab, a fast-growing agency, is hiring a reporter in Oakland, CA. The startup reporter will write about issues facing young tech companies and their founders. These are reported features, and the right candidate will come in knowing the landscape and with a network of potential sources.

Even though we have roots in journalism, we’re an agency doing work for clients. The right candidate will see this role as a great opportunity to sharpen his or her reporting and writing chops, while learning other, increasingly relevant skills, like helping to form the upfront strategy for projects. You’ll work closely with colleagues who are focused on SEO, social promotion, and various methods for determining content effectiveness.

Our editors come from the WSJ, NY Times, Bloomberg, and Business 2.0, and are guided by the standards they followed at those publications

  • 5+ years in journalism, preferably at top publications

Visual designer

We’re looking for a visual designer who can execute editorial design concepts across many projects. You’re a strong communicator who values being part of a team. You’re comfortable being in a fast paced environment, exercise your expertise on design principles, and challenging assumptions. You care about the details, the pixels, hex codes, file formats and the grid. You geek out over data viz and typography, you love illustration, editorial design and interactivity. You have interest in motion and video. Most importantly, you believe in the power of combining design with the written word to move people.

Your primary responsibility will be to support Message Lab’s clients with high quality design. This means helping with design concepts for the stories our journalists write. These editorial images could be in the form of collages, illustrations, data visualization, photography and/or presentation design. You will collaborate with journalists to understand the story they are trying to tell and find the best visual way to do so. You will also be working alongside other teams – from writers to strategists, to craft presentations in Google slides for our clients.

This is a full time employment onsite in Oakland required most days. You will report to Message Lab’s Design Director.

You must have:

  • 2+ years of design experience (preferably agency or editorial) and a solid understanding of design principles and key tools.   
    • Experience in concept and design for editorial content
    • Experience in data visualization
    • Experience in branding, visual identity and design systems
    • Basic understanding the web design process, from sitemaps to wireframes to full visual design and an understanding of design systems.
  • Strong conceptual thinking: Designers are expected to not just execute teammates’ ideas but also be a part of the initial creative process.
  • Leadership skills: Our designers have the opportunity – and responsibility – to come up with great ideas and work with other designers to see them through to the finish.
  • Excellent communication skills: You work both autonomously and as part of a team – you’ll need to do both here, so we want need people who can get their marching orders and go as well as communicate and collaborate.
  • Highly organized and with strong attention to detail.
  • A book of relevant work that leaps off the screen.


Skills & Requirements:

Digital Marketing Analyst

Message Lab is seeking a Web Analytics Specialist to help design and build an engagement-driven analytics product and service. We are looking for someone who understands the importance of data integrity, gets excited about creative tracking solutions, and has a strong point of view on the way things should be done. An interest in journalism and/or editorial content—and showing its effectiveness—is a strong plus.

This person will be able to pick up what we’ve started and own the evolution of our analytics and reporting services. They will be self-motivated, capable of pushing projects over the finish line, acquiring the resources to get something done, and earning buy-in from internal and external teams. Most importantly, this person will be thoughtful, able to articulate why a metric has meaning and what it’s strategic importance is.

Program Manager

Message Lab, a fast-growing agency, is hiring a Program Manager in Oakland, CA. The role will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day program management and delivery of large-scale projects to clients as well as helping to build the project management function at Message Lab. The candidate must have demonstrated experience managing multiple projects at one time and managing or collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team (writers, designers, developers, analysts, etc.) 

The role requires you to be onsite in Oakland 5 days per week with the option to work remotely as needed. Primary responsibilities include the following:

You must have

  • 8-10 years of marketing or communications experience (preferably agency or editorial experience) and solid understanding of developing programs for clients that require integration of  multiple pieces (content, marketing, interactive, website)
  • Leadership skills. This position requires that you look for opportunities to step in and set a course for large projects executed across distributed teams. The ability to manage and lead teams is crucial to success.
  • Bias for action, the ability to course correct and problem solve, and an entrepreneurial spirit always looking for opportunities to evolve and expand valuable services or approaches

Your responsibilities

Strategy & leadership

  • Work with strategy team to shape and execute project intake and plannings
  • Help shape presentations to convey discovery and strategy to clients
  • Help build the evolving discovery and strategy process at Message Lab, refining tools, team roles, and philosophy


Project management

  • Lead the continual optimization of the project coordination discipline to ensure process, systems are working to support our team (editorial, design, strategy, creative) and the client teams
  • Manage teams in reviewing and setting up  new tools and processes that allow teams to work most efficiently.
  • Manage change management required to onboard teams to using new tools
  • Integrate with the Message Lab team across disciplines and distributed offices to drive process across client content programs
  • Create and execute project plans

Project accounting & Financial management

  • Track and report team progress to clients on a weekly / monthly basis as needed
  • Manage project budgets
  • Understand basic revenue models, and makes decisions accordingly
  • Understand company’s pricing model and billing procedures
  • Ensure timely and accurate invoicing in coordination with Head of Operations
  • Assure project legal documents (statement of work, service agreements etc.) are drafted, completed and signed in coordination with Head of Operations
